VisANT can be run as a Java Applet within a browser. However, due to the stronger security settings recently implemented in Java and major browsers, users will likely encounter several warning messages in order to initialize VisANT. Below are step-by-step instructions for running VisANT in major browsers.
Before you start:
Make sure you have the latest Java installed on your computer. You can download it from http://www.java.com. Many Linux distributions have OpenJDK as the default version of Java. For running VisANT, we recommend Oracle Java. Although they are very close, the Oracle version has better performance and contains fewer bugs.
Chrome plans to phase out support for NPAPI, a plugin architecture used by the Java plug-in for web browsers. The NPAPI support has been completely removed for Chrome on Linux. For Chrome on Windows and Chrome on Mac OS X, NPAPI is disable by default but can be manually enabled it in order to run the Java Applet. To enable NPAPI in Chrome, please read.
Chrome and Chromium on Linux dropped support of the Netscape Plugin API, an API required by the Java Plug-in, as of version 35. Therefore, Java applets no longer work in Chrome/Chromium on Linux. For Linux users, we recommend Firefox.
I am using Windows/Mac OS X
Google supplies 64-bit Chrome as of version 37 on Windows and version 39 on Mac OS X. If you are running a 64-bit version of Chrome, you must use 64-bit Java. You can download it from Java Downloads for All Operating Systems
As of April 2015, Chrome on Windows/Mac OS X still supports Java applets. However, a few additional steps are required in order to run it. You first need to make sure the latest version of Java is installed. And then manually enable NPAPI in Chrome. For more details, please read How do I use Java with the Google Chrome browser?
Although VisANT is a lightweight Java program, initialization of the Java applet may still take few seconds to a couple minutes. If you think your browser does freeze while visiting the VisANT website, try to upgrade both the browser and Java to the latest version.
